4.0 out of 5 stars Pixma MG6250 - I like it, 17 Dec. 2011

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MG6250 All-in-One Colour Printer (Print, Copy, Scan Wi-Fi and Auto Duplex) (Accessory)
Bought this to replace my Canon MX700 which suddenly died.

Delivery and packaging was excellent as expected from Amazon.

Initial setup is via the "Getting Started" fold out sheet. This gives the basic instructions on how to unpack, install ink tanks paper, etc.
All other instructions are either online, the enclosed CD or via the screen on the printer - a bit confusing at first, till you get to understand the logic.
The CD loads the printer driver and the "Canon Solution Menu" from which you can choose the various print options like Calendars, Photo, Disc Label, etc. There is also the "Webprint" software which allows you to print parts of a web page, you can highlight the portion to print. Unfortunately it cannot be used with IE9 (yet?) - hopefully it will be updated.

The main thing that directed me to this printer is the ability to print labels on CD/DVDs.
I could not find the instructions on how to print to the disc or how to use the supplied Disk Adapter, till I found that the step by step instructions pop up on the screen of both the PC and the printer when I got to the part to print the CD/DVD label.
If you use non Canon CD/DVD label printer software, then if you choose the Disc Adapter to `print to' in the printer settings, the printer driver will pop up the same instructions.
I found that you don't really need to buy special printable discs. I already had a supply of blank adhesive labels and sticking those onto the disc first, then printing with the Disc Adapter worked just as well. Also, printable discs seem to have mat surfaces while glossy labels look better (in my opinion).

I have connected the printer to the Windows PC via the USB, which works fine, so cannot comment on the WiFi aspect.

As mentioned by previous reviewers, the glossy black body does show up fingerprints and dust quite easily.

It does seem to have a longer startup/cleaning heads time, but once it has done its business, it starts printing quite quickly. I did find that it was better to leave the printer on for the time you may need it to avoid it going through its startup/cleaning cycle every time you switch it on. There is an option to set the time limit when the printer can switch itself off, but would advise setting it to a long enough time to avoid switching it on again.

The option to reduce printing noise works, but may increase print time marginally.

The ink tanks are certainly physically smaller than the ones on my old MX700, and I feel may not last as long which will reflect on the price of each print. For example the colour tanks each have a capacity of 9ml (compared to 15ml in the MX700).

I have no complaints about the colour photo prints which are really excellent, detailed and bright, without any banding and the plain text print is also quite good.

I like the duplex printing. The multipage printout options (e.g. 2 or 4 pages scaled to print on one A4 page and the same on the back) certainly saves a lot of paper if you print manuals, etc.

Print times are not bad - full text A4 pages are acceptable (to me), a colour disk label takes about 25-30secs and the 6x4 prints are about 40-45 seconds - of course, this is dependent on the type of image.

The scanner is good, though the detail is better on others I've seen, it is quite passable - not noticeable unless you look closely.

All in all I like what I have seen of this printer so far, the photo print and DVD/CD label quality is excellent and for what I bought it for.

Many thanks for an excellent review. How do you get to preview scanned images on the PC screen and can you crop the images from there before completing the actual scan.

Many thanks
