Not for me.,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Pillars of the Earth (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book based on all the effusive reviews. Having read this "slab" of a book, I honestly don't understand all the praise.
At the bginning I was quite gripped by the story, although not so much by the writing style. By half-way through I was becoming quite annoyed by the rather "black and white" nature of the characters - the good are good, the bad are really bad - by the sex scenes (they just seemed more graphic than this novel required), and by the slightly plodding nature of the plot. By the end, I was merely reading the book because I hate not finishing a book - the plot had become increasingly incredible, with Prior Phillip becoming a central character in several true key historic events, and I was tired of the habit of the author repeatedly telling us what the characters felt and why - "Yes, I know", I would scream, "I have been reading the story and can work it out myself!"
Action scenes seemed to be the writer's true home.
Sorry, this book just was not for me.

<<Prior Phillip becoming a central character in several true key historic events>>
I forgot to put this in my review - very trite and embarrassing device. Only Flashman can do this with panache - and humour !
(sex scenes) <<they just seemed more graphic than this novel required>>
Yes rape would appear to have been an official hobby in this book.
