Classic Rory, Lackluster Cinematography,
This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour 1974 [DVD] (DVD)
Whilst the Irish Tour '74 audio album is one of the finest releases from Rory Gallagher, I agree absolutely with the other reviewers who find fault with the footage from the tour - Rory's face ad infinitum with little sense of venue and amazingly little opportunity to actually see Rory playing the guitar.
There is thankfully none of the awful chromakey and montage work that was prevalent in this era, but the flow is broken up by backstage and down-time interludes which don't add up to a biography or even a substantial insight into the man. The feeling is that the filmaker wasn't confident people would want to sit through back-to-back performance footage, which I suspect many would in fact have preferred. It seems that few filmakers have the humility to reflect another artists work to that artists constituency - they always seem compelled to try and make their own mark or find their own angle.
