My first taste of Alex Smith and my initial reaction is that this is a real treat. This album personifies what I would like to think pop music should sound like in the 21st century. Ms. Smith is difficult to describe, as her self-penned set of songs cover quite a diverse set of musical genres which I think is the very strength of this set. It would be easy on first listen to pigeon hole this in the respected (by me) Arie/Ledisi/Michelle/Sullivan niche but there is much more going on here due to the mixture and style of songs that keep it proudly independent from the neo-soul genre. Her singing sometimes has a slightly jazzy edge but the vocals at times even have a rock feel to them. After much deliberation, the best comparison I can come up with is the aggressiveness of Siouxsie Sue (still not sure ??) smoothed over with the silky voice of Anita Baker; actually forget that and lets cut to the chase and just say she sounds like ALICE SMITH! The singing on the pop-ballad 'The One' is absolutely stunning - this track should be a summer hit and is the immediate stand out track for me personally. A beautiful selection of intelligently written and produced pop music; well played 0n what appears to be largely real instruments and on occasion some real strings! Not many new albums could be described as sounding this way. Support this record it is a breathe of fresh air and is great! I was impressed enough to buy her debut album on the back of this album.
