I've never listened to this all the way through despite my Dad getting into Springsteen from the early 80's onwards. Having bought it recently myself and done so I should be ashamed of myself for never getting around to it beforehand. The sound of the band is just unbelievable. There is an intensity and a fluidity to it all and you can almost feel them playing their hearts out. Put over the top of that some truly, truly poetic lyrics about disaffected youth, teenage angst, the despair of seeing no future in your surroundings and attempts in vain to escape... every song is just anthemic in it's own right. It should be a miserable affair, but it isn't. What comes out the speakers is uplifting. The blend of rock, original RnB and soul makes an incredible sound with Springsteen's delivery over the top. But enough of the geeky analysis though!
In short, this is one of those few albums that form a part of the DNA of music from every generation that came after it whether bands know it or not. Music very rarely stops me in my tracks these days. This made me just shut up and listen.
