WTF is this book even about!?,
This review is from: 1Q84: Books 1 and 2 (Paperback)
Before I read this book I was a huge fan of Murakami. 'Wow, like a Japanese Iain Banks!', I thought after being entranced by both Kafka on the Shore and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.
After eventually dragging myself to the conclusion of this repetitious ball of self-indulgent drivel I'm not sure what to think. Is it the translation, have my tastes changed, or has the author just lost it?
It's rare that a book actually makes me want to swear. If I hadn't come on Amazon to read other reviews I wouldn't have learned there is a third volume to wade through. F***s given? Zero.
The pace is dreary, the repetition is mind-numbing, the plot seems lost and aimless. A review on another website refers to the "Boobs and Pubes" book. I am no prude and am firmly in favour of boobs but here I have to agree, I found the endless creepy sexual references somewhat uncomfortable.
Is this book even a Murakami? I'm left wondering if maybe that's the gag, a book about a secret ghost writer that's actually written by a secret ghost writer?
I hated it.
