This recording has a special attraction for me since I had the great pleasure of hearing Lisa Batiashvili play the Concerto at this year's Promenade Concerts before a packed and enthusiastic audience. She also played, as an encore, one of the other interesting pieces on the disc - the delightful Lyrical Waltz, also by Shostakovich. The fact that this item was named Recording of the Month by the Gramophone magazine (March 2011) rather confirms that no more recommendation is necessary. The absolutely beautiful tone Batiashvili extracts from her instrument (here the 1727 Venus Stradivarius) is just one facet of her playing. The Concerto itself may, indeed, be the finest of the composer's works in this form, its persuasive combination of Nocturne, Scherzo, Passacaglia and Burlesque covering the full range of his art. I share the criticism of one reviewer as regards the absence of any detailed notes on the music itself and photogenic though the soloist is no fewer than five photographs of her in a thin accompanying booklet are surely too many.
