Discovering Elton in 1978 with the low key but melodic "Single Man" album, and hardly having time to discover his glorious 70s back catalogue, when This Thing appeared. I can only think that Elton was trying to alienate his entire fan base, whether The Hard Core Bunch or The I'm Only Interested In The Singles Crowd, who even then outnumbered the former by a good two to one I reckon. Well he succeeded. And although we would have some good Elton momemts after this, albeit increasingly sporadic, through the '80s, this album must have been, as it was for me, truly depressing for anyone who bothered to play it. Following a series of more or less Golden Eagles from "Honky Chateau" (1971) through "A Single Man" (1978) this album has NO redeeming features. It is, by comparison, like a Dirty Urban Pigeon. You don't get much more disgusting than that.
