GOOD BOOK SPOILED BY PREJUDICE & GOSSIP,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Niv: The Authorised Biography of David Niven (Kindle Edition)
Bought this book expecting to learn more about DAVID NIVEN well loved by millions and one of the last truly-great movie star, knowing his person friends like Roger Moore Lauren Bacall ‘Betty’ and a whole host of others screen legends would pass on their personal remembrances about this wonderful man.
Wasn’t disappointed with the detailed picture draw by good research and how the book brings you closer to understanding the man behind the camera.
However, I wasn’t prepared for the vitriolic and systematic and REPETITIVE character assassination throughout the book of his third wife of over 30 years (and widow) Hjordis Niven. I think by about three-quarters of the way through the book, we’d all got the idea that she was a bit larger-than-life, frequently whored around behind her spouses back and liked her drinkiepoos. (Hang on a bit – whenever her hubby did it, it was just ‘NIV’ being 'NIV' - a bit of a lad, and people loved him for it?) Talk about DOUBLE STANDARDS!! Even by the social climate of the day, this very bigoted attitude was a bit of a stretch of the imagination. It came over almost as if the author had a personal hatred of Hjordis?
By the end of the book, I had lost all respect for the author, and a host of gaggling international stars gossiping about Mrs Niven like some petty, small-minded fishwives over a garden fence! They should be ashamed to read in print what they allegedly said..and KEPT saying. How closely would their own lives stand up public scrutiny – the thought of Bacall getting it on with Sinatra as Bogey lay dying of cancer then frequently stabbing Mrs Niv in the back for being less than perfect was just too appalling for words!
I’ve heard the rumours and stories before about Hjordis Niven. But this book made me realise she was quite possibly at the centre of some nasty cabal of people hell-bent on destroying her life and making her miserable. 30 years of marriage is a hell of a long time to remain married – especially by Hollywood standards. How sad that she is no longer with us to write her own account of what life was like living with her serial- philandering and heavy drinking husband constantly seeking the limelight for approval from everyone he met, because it seems left to the mercy of others she’s come off very badly indeed.
Jolly Poor Sport Old Chap .

I take your point but, having read and enjoyed this book, surely Niv`s friends rail against Hjordis because she was evidently such a nasty piece of work, not because of her affairs and so on. I`m not surprised Niv had affairs too, but he stuck by her, whereas one gets the strong impression she `stuck by him` since she knew which side her bread was buttered.
