Sturdy and solid,
This review is from: Smart Weigh Professional Digital Kitchen and Postal Scale with Tempered Glass Platform (Kitchen & Home)
I received one of these direct from the company to try out. They have not asked for or suggested that I write a favourable review, they have left me to write what I want good or bad.
This is a very smart looking set of scales that will fit in with just about any kitchen. A large glass plate with bevelled and rounded corners and edges sits atop a polished black base which is finished off with non-scratch, non-slip soft rubberised feet. Large buttons let you change unit size and tare weights easily. The display is LCD and has large numbers, but unfortunately lacks the blue back light that is found on other models from the Smart Weigh range. Whilst the numbers are easy to read, it can be a bit tricky to make out the smaller lettering of the unit measurement. The scales come with a 1x CR2302 lithium battery which are easily sourced. There is some confusion with the measurements. The Amazon page doesn't mention that it can weigh mls and the instructions say it will weigh fl.oz. What I found were:
grams in 1g increments
lbs and oz in 0.1oz increments
Ounces in 0.1oz increments - advertised as fluid oz in the instruction booklet
ml in 1ml increments - not advertised on Amazon page
I'll feed this back to the manufacturer and hopefully get this straightened out. It could be the 'oz' display is fluid ounces, but I can't check that at the moment.
1, 50, 500 gram and 1kg certified weights from a butcher friend all weighed accurately without the need to calibrate the scales. I cannot say what the accuracy of the fluid measurements are as I don't have any certified capacities. I can't recall ever having to weigh a fluid, but the option is there if you need it. That being said, for most household baking you don't need something of atomic accuracy! Most of the time I just throw things in until they are close.
Up to now I have evaluated and reviewed several sets of scales from Smart Weigh and I have been impressed with the accuracy, quality and durability of each set I have tried. I throw them like a Frisbee for the dog to play fetch, drop them on hard surfaces, ridiculously overload them and generally abuse them. Apart from cosmetic damage they continue to work and have maintained their accuracy. However, I can't throw these around as the top plate is a tempered glass and whilst I know it is toughened, it will no doubt shatter on impact with the first hard surface they come into contact with (at speed!) and that is no fault of the scales. Whilst I haven't been able to abuse these like I normally would, I am more than confident that they are as good as the others in the Smart Weigh range.
Out of the 5 scales I have evaluated from Smart Weigh, these are by far my favourite, even though they have no back light on the LCD display.
