GOOD, BUT TRIES TO BE A BIT TOO CLEVER,
This review is from: Timecrimes [DVD] (DVD)
Bought this after catching the last two thirds on TV one night.
It's an interesting plot line, with a relatively small cast (four I believe), with the writer/directer playing one of the parts. It's low budget, which shows, but is one of the things that adds to the appeal.
It plays along the typical time travel lines with a twist, the hero (anti-hero) of the part finding himself in the situation where he has to eradicate himself in the past (or the future - I'm not quite sure which) sort of "Looper" style - although not quite the same as there's three (or is it four) of him/them in the same time frame. It does become slightly confusing!!!
And that is a slight problem - it becomes over involved. Time travel films are never going to be easy because the concept can be difficult to grasp - too many "but what ifs". It kinda works, especially as it's not immediately obvious what's actually happening until further on into the movie, when (for me at least) things start to drop into place. That for me was the appeal - it was sort of a time travel whodunnit. However, I did need to watch it intently, especially as it was sub-titled - any momentary lapse of concentration & I'd lost the plot(literally). Truth be told, when the film finished, I wasn't sure whether I'd watched it from start to finish or whether I'd just seen a segment of the loop!!
If you IMDB it, there are quite a few different theories about it, draw your own conclusion to it.
Well worth watching before Hollywood turns it into a big budget re-make & gets it completely wrong!!
