LONG GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN,
This review is from: The Essential Collection - Skiffle (Audio CD)
This 2-CD set follows hard on the heels of Rexx's ambitiously-titled double compilation "Skiffle At Its Best", but at almost half the price. So how do they compare? Some duplication was almost inevitable, but nine tracks out of 50 is not as much as you might have expected.
In part, this is because this collection is more firmly based in the genre, and whilst the usual suspects (Ken Colyer, The Vipers, Chas McDevitt) are included the net has been cast wider. The Chris Barber tracks, and one of Lonnie Donegan, include vocals by Dick Bishop and Johnny Duncan. The latter also features with his Blue Grass Boys, and Peggy Seeger, Beryl Bryden, Betty Smith, Bob Wallis, Alexis Korner, the Avon Cities and the City Ramblers all get a share. The track titled "New Orleans" later became a hit for Eric Burdon and The Animals under the title of "The House Of The Rising Sun".
