In this, the 30th anniversary year of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, thoughts inevitably turn, not just to the likes of Maiden and Leppard, but to those who should've been. And no-one should've been bigger, or better, than Diamond Head.
I had these releases when they first came out but hadn't listened to them for years. I expected they might not have stood the test of time. How wrong I was! Across two discs, I'm stunned at just how inventive and technically astute they were, taking a form often lambasted for being the domain of brainless thickos and ladling on sharp guitar tricks, on-a-dime time changes, and layers and layers of melody. Perhaps the only thing missing is the glossy studio quality on the earlier tracks but who really cares about that.
Easily the best NWOBHM band - no, really! - it's a shame we shan't see the original Tatler/Harris/Kimberley/Scott line-up take to the stage again. Unless....
