Customer Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Good history of documentary photography, 3 Jan. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Magnum Magnum (Hardcover)
There are some very good images in the book and the quality of reproduction is fairly good. But overall the photographs vary widely in their quality with some struggling to even be classified as poor snapshots.

In some ways the photos selected seem more those that a friend would select from knowing which are the photographers personal favourites - a scrapbook prepared for internal consumption by the Magnum family rather than a book to showcase their best work to the world.

They are all incredibly moving "snapshots" - all of a very high quality, thank you, Magnum, we unfortunately do not find this quality elsewhere,

I know Brigitte Lardinois and she has worked with Magnum for a long time so the comment; "the photos selected seem more those that a friend would select from knowing which are the photographers personal favourites" is quite possibly true :)

I think you are dead right.

It's good, but a bit puffed up really. I was so disappointed, and yet at the same time reassured that big name photographers publish bland images too on occasions!

Darrill, you are so right - I was about to leave a review saying the same thing, having sometimes found in the book on one page the kind of photograph I regularly delete from camera and on the next the kind of masterpiece to which I aspire. I think that many of the Magnum photographers are photo-journalists whose forte is capturing news rather than art, and few have the confidence to criticise such an established name.
