This review is from: Perry Mason: Season 2 [DVD] (DVD)
These early TV Perry Mason programmes, in which the lawyer detective solves every week another mystery, are fascinating watching. This is the series from 1958. I must have watched these on British TV in about 1962, while living in lodgings in Warrington. As as result, I have looked forward to their release in DVD format and the chance to revisit the series.
Based on Erle Stanley Gardner's character, who figures in a great output of his detective novels, the TV series was filmed in contemporary USA, itself now a source of fascination, a veritable time capsule.
Perry Mason, Series 1 was published by the BBC last year. Now we have Series 2 to wallow in! Nostalgia? Maybe, but certainly entertaining. Each 50 minute programme nicely fills the television schedules when there is a gap in attractive programming.
The essence of each story is that Perry Mason, with the assistance of his helpers, confronts the full force of the law and always wins his case. Not that he resorts to a technical subversion of the law, but that he believes in the innocence of his clients. How he achieves this calls for the greatest ingenuity of the scriptwriters.
