This review is from: After the Fire (Paperback)
Quite simply one of the best novels I've ever read and I wish I could rate it half as eloquently as it has been written!
The story takes us through the events surrounding the shooting of a young girl by a newly qualified firearms officer in Glasgow. His journey is an emotional one and the story is told so vividly that I found myself caring deeply for all of the main characters plus a few of the peripheral characters too! Not only is this a highly original plot line, but it is also exquisitely crafted in Karen Campbell's unique rich prose.
I didn't like Anna Cameron in Twilight Time but she was much more sympathetic in this sequel and redeemed herself in my opinion! From a technical persepctive, the novel is also much lighter in dialect than Twilight Time and I think it would go down very well in the international market and would translate well into other languages. I also think it stands alone from Twilight Time as any necessary explanations of backstory are discreetly integrated in the narrative without being in the least repetitive.
If I could give it 15/10 I would.
