I never really understood the meaning of gallantry, other than it was something to be desired, but now, by Jove I do!
Florian Duc de Puysange, in the nearly 18th century is the personification of Bluebeard and enters into a pact with the devil to further his many murderous schemes. Of course he does it all beautifully, and according to his own lights he is a perfect gentleman who has drifted into misfortunes, which he must bear bravely and with perfect decorum.
This is a very accessible and enjoyable yarn of villainy and perfect manners. It romps along speedily, but does not mislay the the depths of allegory and double meaning we have come to expect of Mr Cabell.
