This review is from: The Last Great Wilderness (Audio CD)A wonderful album of haunting themes and beautiful motifs, mainly instrumental tracks as you'd expect from a film soundtrack with two 'songs' proper on the album. I've not seen the film this was recorded for (The Last Great Wilderness by David Mackenzie 2003)but I believe it was a bit of a ghostly thriller and the tracks on here go well to evoke that mood. It conjures up images of autumn heather, browning leaves and solitary figures in breathtaking landscapes. The cover of Sly & The Family Stone's 'Everybody is a star' is understated and works really well and comes across as a dream-like refrain, I love it. However I find Mr Cockers contribution 'I picked a flower' to be the low point of the album hence the 4 stars, it really doesn't fit with the feel of the rest of the album and in this case less really would have been more.
I bought this because I liked the Pastels and really didn't know what I'd be getting. What I found was a real gem that continues to sparkle on every listen. If you want something you can put on and unwind to then this is it. Pour yourself a glass of red wine and enjoy and remember so as not to kill the mood kill the CD before the last track.
