3.0 out of 5 stars High hopes led to disappointment, 21 Aug. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Battle Won (Hardcover)
Having read "Under Enemy Colours" which I enjoyed immensley and saw as a very good stand-alone book, I opened "A Battle Won" with a lot of enthusiasm and hope that Midshipman Hayden would grow in character and no doubt obtain promotion through his own or others "dareing-do". I guess at its simplest, that is what happened, but like other reviewers, I found Hayden's character not one that I could warm to even by the last page. True, he had had lots of adventures, had done stirling work, but he was almost too nice a character. Equally I found the chapters on his exploits in Sicily quite boring. Page after page of minute detail of how to get 18 pounder guns and a howitzer up mountains.
I admire the obvious detailed research Sean Thomas Russell must have carried out; his detail of historical figures bears out my own reading on Admiral Lord Hood and Napoleon, but I wanted to like and admire his hero much more than I ended up doing and therin lies the disappointment for this reader. Let us hope that if he continues the series that Captain Haydn grows in character, flaws and all.

would seem that not much attention was paid to the content given that "Lieutenant Hayden" actually spent his short Mediterranean adventure on "Corsica". I for one am hooked and just wish there were another dozen novels to go at.
