Good Background Information - Fleshing out the Bones,
This review is from: Tracing Your Northern Ancestors: A Guide to the North East and Cumbria for the Family Historian (Paperback)The book is entertainingly written and gives a good idea of the geography, occupations and daily life of your ancestors who lived in Cumberland, Westmoreland, Northern Lancashire, County Durham and Northumberland.
Best read however once you have already got the basics of research from a basic genealogy text, as otherwise some of the assumptions made by the author about the knowledge of the reader do not quite work out and you will be starting to ask libraries for the wrong thing.
I am certainly still learning new things from this book so it is not just for the novice but the professional.
I would have liked a detailed section on the Northumberland and Durham Parish registers especially as the National Index of Parish Registers volume is now out of print, so I do think a trick may have been missed here.
