This review is from: Guitar Heaven: Santana Performs The Greatest Guitar Classics Of All Time (Audio CD)
In the last many years the illustrious Carlos Santana have led kind of a double life. Playing adventurous, spiritual and explorative concerts and releasing some highly commercial rather glossy albums.
And though there is some fierce playing on this album, not least by Carlos himself - might be his most guitar heavy CD in years - "Guitar Heaven" does not really break this pattern. I have to admit I hoped for some more interesting arrangements, where as in fact most of the songs get a typical AOR treatment, actually sounding a lot like old bandmate Neal Schon's Journey. And in some cases the result seems rather poor and lacking in depth and inventiveness compared with the original, not least with Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" and Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking".
This is certainly not covers but interpretations but its definitely not latin rock either. I guess the album works best when the version is as far removed from the original. Like "Back In Black" turned into a rap number with Nas, India.Arie's beautiful "While My Guitar.." and the positive surprise: Joe Cocker's brilliant take on "Little Wing".
Ofc there will be discussion about what's included and what's not. No Peter Green, David Gilmour, Neil Young or Stephen Stills but essentially this is an exciting album for guitar fans and certainly Carlos' best album since "Supernatural". Lots of good hints for the 'experts', the way both Santana and superdrummer Dennis Chambers put in trademark licks and signature rolls of their heroes.
The musicianship and production is topnotch as one would expext. Lots of fine guests like Chriss Cornell and Ray Manzarek, who provides some psychedelic organ weirdness on "Riders On The Storm". An absolute must for Santana fans and guitarfreaks. And hopefully it will get young people to dig into the real gold: the original bands and guitarheroes.
