This review is from: Wagner: The Goodall Ring Cycle [ENGLISH LANGUAGE] (Audio CD)
The Goodall Ring appeared to command great reverence in the Gramophone magazine and on Radio 3 in the 1990s,and to do so on its own musical terms, notwithstanding the interest for an English speaker to hear the ring sung in their native language.
Therefore I have always been curious to hear the Goodall Ring but I had never had the chance to hear it until recently.
My Ring collection comprises the usual suspects, so I'm familiar with a fairly wide range of recordings and it has been my experience that all have much to give in their different ways- such is the depth and greatness of Wagner's masterwork, it seems inexhaustible, and I am hard pressed to find a Ring that does not grip me in some way.
However, I really struggled with the Goodall Ring- to my ears the orchestra were simply not up to it, sounding at times almost amateurish. Some of the singing was painfully week in my view. Overall I could perceive no dramatic vision holding everything together- the very, very slow tempi simply attenuated everything to a point beyond any cohesion, such that it all fell apart and became something of a purgatorial experience to be endured.
At the time of writing the Goodall Ring is comparatively expensive at over £100.
I strongly recommend that it is not bought blind, as it is a most unusual interpretation and performance, the merits of which I am at a loss to appreciate.
