4.0 out of 5 stars "We're not doing it for the money..." A Damned reunion., 4 Dec. 2001
This review is from: Final Damnation (Audio CD)
Final Damnation is an excellent live show from The Damned's Reunion Concert of summer 1988, which saw original members Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James and Rat Scabies on stage blasting out some classic Damned from their early days. The track listing is heavily based on early Damned material, much more "punkier" than their later styles. Kicking off with fast and furious renditions of "See Her Tonite" and "Neat Neat Neat" the band doesn't fail to please the crowd. The band play with lots of energy; the songs are fast and furious. Following the blast of material from their debut album "Damned Damned Damned", excellent performances of "Smash It Up" and "Love Song" are well worth it. A favourite moment of mine on the CD is when The Damned's 'front man' Dave Vanian says to the crowd "We love you, you're the sweetest bunch of nicest people", followed by "We're not doing it for the money" to which the crowd reply "Oh yes you are..." then a rising cheer as bassist Paul Gray kicks into 'Neat Neat Neat'. A Beatles' song "Help" is performed, just after a round of thanks is given for everyone involved in the gig. "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" and "Wait For The Blackout" are performed very well, and the the set ends with a Jagger-Richards song "The Last Time". Final Damnation is a powerful live performance by The Damned, and although perhaps a bit too much emphasis on early material, it is still worth 4 out of 5 for sheer energy and on-stage skill (there are some excellent guitar solos).
