4.0 out of 5 stars Hawk the Slayer is a great piece of cod british fantasy, 2 April 2000
This review is from: Hawk The Slayer [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Chances are you may have seen this while a kid. If so your love will already be confirmed. Its not a great movie, perhaps not even a good one, but it is a lot of fun! :)
The setting is stock Tolkien/D&D fantasy set at the twilight of a fantasy realm where other races are almost extinct. Hawk is our clean cut, sharp talking hero (I've known people who wanted to be him when they were young.
It has some great supporting members (including Bernard Bresslaw as Gort the Giant) as Hawk and his summoned gang try to protect a nunnery from the evil Voltan.
Those Hawk and the Strange Mystic Woman summoned were the last of their kind. Gort the Giant, Crow the Elf, Baldin the Dwarf. Also hanging about is Ranulf, a one armed miserable sod.
Voltan is Hawks disfigured brother and is played in a hysterically overdone performance by Jack Palance who is obviously in the wrong movie, as he sounds often like a Baptist Preacher filled with the wrath of God.
The first half of the movie is a number of snappily written encounters, which are curiously more satisfying than the main story.
The music is somewhere between Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds and Ennio Morricone.
The effects (I believe) were by a BBC department, look out for silly string and luminous power balls.
Once you have learned to love the faults of the movie, you will come to a higher understanding my friend.
For though the faults are many the rewards are richer and with repeat viewing like a fine wine it matures with age.
Here lies good humour, comradeship, good versus evil, laugh out loud jokes and ultimately one of the more satisfying fantasy films ever made.
Ladies, Gentlemen and Slavers of the river Shale, I give you...
Hawk - the Slayer!
