Trance doom genius!,

Oh man...where do you start with this? Having discovered Sunn O))) through a track included on the ltd Julian Cope 'Rome...' release last year, I seem to have become fascinated by the sheer weight of their music. As the other reviews have stated these guys are very heavy and very slow, but are incredibly adept at producing music that is shot through with emotion and beauty. The opener 'Richard' demonstrates this perfectly as it builds through 15 minutes of wailing, humming drone ending with what could be described as the sound of sick angels howling due to their infliction.
The album seems to induce a trance like state in the listener, distant calls, akin to Buddhist chanting can be picked up within the riff of 'NN O)))' which instill a sense of calm amongst the storm. The final two tracks are equalling awe inspiring, although you do need to listen to this in the right context. Background music it ain't! Perhaps a darkened room, and headphones will present the best atmosphere, but whatever, to truly appricaite the scale and beauty of this record it needs to be played loud. Which may not please the neighbours.
Better than 'White 1' and 'White 2' for my money, though all are recommended. Shamanic and other worldly, Sunn O))) will appeal to doom metal fans, and those in need of trance like music alike.
