3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure I got the same version of this book that has other reviewers raving - found it repetitive and a bit dull...., 3 Jun 2011
This review is from: Born Of Shadows: Number 4 in series (League) (Paperback)
I'm not going to go on about the blurb, as amazon is now doing this so well with most books, but I borrowed this book from my library for forty pence, and thought that it was money ok-spent.

I quite enjoyed the first three books on their incarnation, and re-read them a few years ago, once they'd been lengthened and fleshed-out on their reincarnation, and for me, it's a case of the original being the best. I liked the connections between each book, and when the next generation down appeared in a novella (the son of one of the original leads, sorry, can't remember more), that was decent too, again because of the connections.

In this, Caillen is connected in that he is Shahara's adopted brother, and therefore Sin's brother-in-law, so I was prepared for more of the same, but I found it a tad...boring. Too much time spent on fighter ships, too much time dodging enemies/frenemies, too much fighting and in-fighting and skullduggery. I couldn't really see the attraction between Caillen and Desideria, as I didn't feel that I got told enough about her to be able to form her image in my mind. I also think that the author shied away from outright describing her as Black/non-Caucasian, which IMHO, makes me think why go there with a mixed-race couple if you're not really going to go there? I mean, we get hints with the use of 'dusky' and 'exotic', 'bow lips' and 'lush curves', but why not tell us outright? Plus, the time they do spend with each other, they're bloodied, dirty, haven't showered for days and then suddenly, they are having sex in the shower, with it being her first time and that's it - a one-time event? The attraction wasn't visible to me, and didn't seem plausible; the scene was there because there is meant to be some romantic element to this series.

Overall, it was an ok read, I suppose, but IMHO it's another case of authors who have a demanding and expectant fanbase putting out ok books, rather than great books, in order to fulfill a deadline, to please their publishers and hopefully their fans, but also to line their own pockets. I can think of several series, including the 'summer biggie SK' Were/Dark Hunter ones, where the recent books have been less than brilliant. But, hey, that's just my IMHO.
