Petty the Gent,
This review is from: Conversations with Tom Petty (Paperback)
I picked this up recently because I've always been a fan of Tom Petty and I was surprised because it's not often you get a look into the heart and mind of songwriters. Zollo does a great job of drawing Petty to places where we see how the music came together. The second part of the book gets a little technical where they talk about the songs and chord progressions etc and although I'm not a player I did find a lot of things he speaks of to be wonderful.
The best part of the book is clearly the first part and Zollo gets Petty to talk about the tragic fire and also about the demise and death of Howie. They were very emotional points in the book. Also loved how Petty spoke about The Traveling Wilbury's. Through his conversation you get a different picture of Bob Dylan than I imagined.
The music is of course the important thing and I just spent two days listening to the whole back catalog and having read the book you see things in a new light.
Petty is a perfect gent throughout the book and I highly recommend it to any who have an interest in music, especially Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
