Rare Recordings by the Under-rated Darlings of Bubblegum-pop,

This review is from: Shame On You - The Native Years (Audio CD)
"Shame On You" is a collection of early and rare recordings by a band ahead of the game, and ahead of their time. A product of the same late eighties scene that created groups like "The Primitives" and "Voice of The Beehive" - the Darling Buds were briefly flavour of the month with the music press. As time went on their music matured into fine spiky-edged pop which set them ahead not just of their peers, but the Britpop scene they pre-empted.
This collection stems back to 1987 and their early efforts with Sheffield based label Native. Some of the tracks are simply early substandard demos of songs that went on to form part of their debut album "Pop Said...". However, hidden amongst them are some undiscovered classics - including "Valentine" - possibly the 'Buds finest hour - gloriously angst ridden and yet optimistic.
As a definitive collection of the bands material, you would be wiser to check out some of their other albums, however, as an introduction for newcomers or a compilation for completests - it aint half bad.
