This review is from: Swan Lake/Sleeping Beauty/The Nutcracker [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a well presented box-set of three classic ballets, but...

Two of the disks aren't in the PAL broadcasting standard, this means that if either your DVD player, or Television can't display NTSC then only 1 of the three disks is of any use (The Nutcracker). I am unable to offer a review of all the disks here as my DVD player takes issue with NTSC disks and cannot play them.

The Nutcracker DVD seems to have been produced from an old video recording, and the card insert confirms that this was recorded in 1985 - and it looks it. The picture is a bit 'fuzzy', the original video either hasn't been cleaned, or has been done badly. So there appears to be no digital remastering, and as well as the less than satisfactory picture quality we have this presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is a real shame as such a great set would benefit from a picture to really show off the vivid colours of the costumes, and a widescreen aspect ratio to make the most of the beautiful sets.

In a nutshell - I was excited about this, the package is bright and modern, but this doesn't reflect the actual footage. What you get is poor picture quality, poor colour, and quite possibly only the one disk playable on your home set-up. Disappointing.

I can understand your frustration, but browsing the reviews on Amazon for the DVD player you already have may show you the way to unlock your DVD player: We got the Phillips 3310 which isn't sold as multi-region, but with the help of a reviewer it is now multi-region (zone 0) Philips DVP3310/05 DVD Player - Black I also looked up the Sony DVD player Sony DVP-NS76H - DVD Player with HDMI and 1080i Upscaling that my Mum has and we were able to change it to multi-region thanks to a reviewer on Amazon.co.uk or you can do a Google search for the hack. Thanks for your review of the ballets.
