You need time and an open mind to read this one,
This review is from: Saturday (Paperback)
I found Saturday an immensely satisfying read. I felt as if I was completely inside Perowne's mind and found that elating. You don't have to identify with him and in many ways I didn't, but I was gripped by his thoughts, responses and actions. I enjoyed his relationship with his wife and children and found the struggles in his reponses to his daughter honest and helpful. There are moments of immense tension around the character Baxter, and found McEwan's unusual resolution of that situation unexpectedly satisfying. I also found it fascinating to follow the brain surgery and the squash game. There are plenty of long, rich thoughtful passages - you have to go at their pace, rather than wish there was more action! I did find that I got more out of the book when I had time to read every word, rather than my usual speed-reading, looking for events!
This book is patently not to everyone's taste but if you can take this man and his life at face value, even if you don't share the same lifestyle and experiences yourself (as I don't!) I think you will enjoy it.
