Competent, if twee (Grade One edition),
This review is from: John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano/FIRST Grade Book (Paperback)
I am writing this review to warn potential customers of one thing. While the book appears entirely competent, going into plenty of theory while still being full of examples, the TONE of the book is outdated and extremely twee. Many of the songs are about fairies, little birds and the like.
You may well consider this to be an entirely petty complaint, which would be fair enough, but I personally find this kind of content far less engaging than the other book I purchased (The Classic Piano Course, Carol Barratt) as I cannot help but feel patronised! (I am self-teaching)
Other than that, beware: this series of books comes in different grades, but with the same basic title. Make sure you purchase the right ones - the grade is written on the cover.

Mr. Andrew Clayton says:
With greatest respect, the book is listed on Amazon with a publishing date of June 1942. I think you could assume a certain dated feel on that basis. John Thompson's books can be very useful when teaching small children, and are often no more twee than other books in a similar vein.

What is funnier is that you say you don't like to be patronised then tell us to check what number is on the front of the book, hilarious.

I think it's quite a helpful review. Music books are often 'lived with' for months and years so the style needs to be attractive and appropriate if it's to be used for any length of time. The publication date wouldn't necessarily have indicated the style or content - many instrumental tutors date from the distant past and are varied in their material and level. Many famous violin tutors are still useful today despite being over a century old.
Thanks for your review!

Thanks for the review; really do appreciate it BUT I am a total novice and my teacher has loaned me this. I find it really helpful and I am not patronised in any way, I just want to learn to play. I am going to buy this book.
