5.0 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Double Set: A couple of good family action movies for older preteens and teenagers - we really enjoyed both of them, 11 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief / Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Double Pack [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
My 19 year old daughter is a fan of the Percy Jackson books from her earlier teens and we all really enjoyed Percy Jackson & the lightning thief back in 2010. Seemed an age for the 'Sea of Monsters' sequel to arrive in 2013, but we saw it at the cinema and liked it as much as the original. Set in the present day, young Percy is a half blood demi-god, the son of Greek God Poseidon/Neptune and a human mother, and these films are based on Rick Riordan's 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians' series of books. Aimed squarely at young teens, the books and films follow the adventures of a group of kids being trained at Camp Half Blood, a camp specially set up for the human children of the Gods. It's all action and there's Minotaurs, Centaurs, Satyrs, the Hydra, the Medusa, nasty Cyclops and the like that help or hinder Percy and his young friends on their two epic quests. Logan Lerman (now 21) makes a likeable lead as Percy Jackson, ably supported by the other youngsters and adult stars (e.g. Anthony Head and Nathan Fillion). My teenage son and daughter loved the films, and there's enough humour and action to please the adults with them, so 5*. These films cover the first two books in the Percy Jackson series of the same name (so there's three more to go). We had the first movie on DVD but as this Blu-ray set didn't cost much more (£20), we decided to get the first one again in hi-def. The Sea of Monsters disk also has a Digital HD Ultraviolet version, although the 'Lightning Thief' disk doesn't.

Regarding the Blu-ray disks, 'The sea of monsters' is regions ABC, but 'The Lightning Thief' is only regions BC (i.e. not playable in the Americas/East Asia region A), so both disks are fine for Europe/Africa/Australia/China/Russia/India. As well as the 2D movies in Blu-ray hi-def, the Sea of Monsters extras are 'Tyson Motion Comic', 'Deconstructing a DemiGod', 'Back to Camp Halfblood' and 'It's all in the eye', with The Lightning Thief having 'Deleted Scenes', 'Secrets of the Gods', 'Discover your power quiz', 'Inside Camp Half Blood', 'On set with Brendon T Jackson', 'Meet the DemiGods', and 'BD-Live live lookup powered by imdb'. The two disks are English Language only with English subtitles & English audio description (no other languages). Sound is 5.1 Dolby Digital and 7.1 DTS-HD audio (Sea of Monsters) and 5.1 DTS-HD audio (lightning Thief), with predictably good sound and hi-def video via our Samsung 32" hi-def TV/Onkyo 5.1 surround sound system. Both films are PG rated (age 7+), and they are a little scary for younger preteens. The two standard size Blu-ray boxes come in a cardboard sleeve, and run time is 101 minutes (Sea of Monsters) and 113 minutes (lightning Thief). My daughter says the films are fairly faithful to the excellent books, but they are a bit like the Harry Potter movies - you know what Percy is thinking in the books, but in the films you have to deduce this from his facial expressions when he is being chased by a car load of Furies.

Hi DW. Sorry that's right, the Blu-ray of older 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief' movie doesn't have an Ultraviolet version. I have corrected the review - thanks for pointing it out. Our 'Sea of Monsters' Blu-ray says the Ultraviolet HD code is only valid for the UK/Ireland and the code has to be redeemed by December 2015.
