After seeing the books in the Sci-Fi section i figured, get the first one and if you like it you can get the series. Well on the strength of this. Get the series.
As with Elizabeth Moon, Weber's female Captain has fallen foul of her superiors and gets assigned to a backwater. When a rival then leaves her with the one ship to protect and police the sector, things don't look good. However the determination to do what the job requires to the best of her ability is something other people can relate to and is what gets you on the character's side.
Even the side characters who die during the book are detailed with a regard that makes you care about their fate. Some of it you can see coming but some of it not.
It also goes into the detail of how the ships travel through space, and is a bit more convincing than the usual Star Trek starship combat.
