...exciting modern prog from Sky Architect drummer...,
This review is from: Making Sense (MP3 Download)
"Making Sense" is the second solo album from drummer Christiaan Bruin, a man whose day job involves beating the skins for well regarded modern progsters, Sky Architect. Following on from his debut "A Glimpse Inside", this continues his one man exploration of symphonic prog.
And it is a one man exploration, as Christiaan performed, recorded and produced all the instruments and vocals, as he did on his previous outing. So, a bit of a show off, then. But deservedly so, because this is a very good album indeed. As befits a good prog album, it's a concept album. And the concept is - deep breath - "One enters life and immediately questions arise, universal questions about existence and meaning. Why am I, and what should I do?" No faeries or goblins here, then.
Instead, it's an array of melodic, symphonic progressive rock, which nods towards the likes of IQ from the eighties and Yes from the seventies, while drawing on 21st century production know how. He's a good singer and an excellent musician, something that is particularly apparent when he stretches out on lenghty pieces like 'Walking From A Dream' and 'Eve Of Destiny'.
It's an album of big ideas and big ambitions, the latter of which are pulled off, more often than not. It's definitely a record that fans of modern prog should be checking out.
