I'm not one of those who read the book, so I can only give my impression based on what the screen had to offer. It starts off on a very promising note, giving the impression that here is a series that's going to be truly memorable. Funny how first impressions can be misleading. I certainly liked the zany take on the Willesden scene, compacting the competing cultures into a very small sphere.
The acting was generally as convincing as it needed to be, particularly the exquisite Om Puri who always steals every scene he is in. It's simply a pity the whole thing just fragmented by itself, trying to go in every direction at once, without ever really getting anywhere. In fact, I found that the longer it went on the more repetitive it became, so that the end came more as a relief than a regret. Not a good sign.
Still, there is much to be enjoyed in this kaleidoscope, with so many quirky characters and a well captured sense of the times. If it hadn't been so patchy, and the script had been more controlled it would have rated higher.
