This review is from: Yanni Voices (Audio CD)
the title of my review says it all, this album should be called The Downfall. I have every CD, Compilation CD or DVDs by Yanni. All were brilliant, great music, excellent composition, always puts you in a wonderful dreamy, magical, and relaxing mood that keeps you hooked on his music for hours. Every piece of music had something to say, meaning was there, and every album was different and shows a great genius at work. Cannot tell you how long i have been waiting for this, seeing videos, previews, checking Yanni's website, and looking forward to see how his idea of showing different styles of ethnic music, with songs in his new album would work.
Well, it did not. Unfortunately, this is by far the worst album I have listened to by Yanni, total let down. First, I think the idea is good, but the actual outcome is just bad, really bad. Why change something that has worked for years, got a huge fan base behind it? why?
The 'new' music, is not new, it is all a replay of his old pieces of music, with add lyrics. And this last bit, i.e. the lyrics, is what destroyed the whole thing. It shatters it to pieces. Mid-way through the album, I just wanted to stop it, to end the agony, but kept listening in hope of finding the old Yanni spark in it, well it is not there. Second, if I loved Yanni for his music, why would I want to find lyrics in them, this is not pure music anymore, not to mention that i did not understand a single word of the songs that are not English. Which brings us to the other point, and that is where is the real ethnicity in this? most of the songs are in Spanish, and most of the singers are Hispanic, OK, fair enough, they have nice voices, and nothing against singing in Spanish, but what about other Ethnic singing styles? what about Italian? Russian? Chinese or Japanese? French? why not make a nice variation of styles? If i wanted to listen to a Spanish album, I would have got myself a Julio Iglesias album, and would have enjoyed it a zillion times more, even without understanding a word. Cause Julio is a singer, Yanni is not. And sorry, but i thought the singing was very unsuitable for the music. It is like you are size XL, you buy yourself an XS shirt, and try to stretch it to fit. That will never work, and this will never work. The idea might seem original, change in direction, change in style, etc, but there is no point, if something is not broken, why break it and then try to fix it?
I did not like it at all, did not enjoy it at all, not worth the money, and so disappointing to see a legend do this to his own work. What a shame. Hope Yanni comes back to the way he used to be, and give us something new, with original magical music, not something recycled and then tortured by lyrics. If you are expecting something new here, don't, and do not waste your money, you would be a lot better off going back to Yanni's old albums and listen to them, you would be doing yourself a favor. If you want to give this a try, then hope you like it, cause It just did not work for me.
