Wow, what an amazing book. I read A LOT and am always looking for something a bit different and I found it in this book. The first few chapters were a little confusing, trying to keep track of 3 different families and how they were linked with each other. I have to confess I skipped to the bit where the contents of the letter are revealed (it's near the beginning but did spoil the section preceeding it when I read it properly so don't do it). The characters are believable and easy to like (or dislike) and as a wife and mum it did really make me question what I would do in every situation in the book. Things are never that clear cut are they and this book really demonstrates it and the different outcomes. Midway through the book I was wondering where it was going to go and hoping it would move on a bit faster but the ending is really EXCELLENT (don't try and guess it) and I always love an epilogue and this book has the best one I've ever read, completely changing how I'd seen the story in just a few pages. If you love Sliding Doors or even JK Rowling Casual Vacancy (about how the actions of villagers affect other seemingly unconnected people and the ripples through people's lives that they cause) then you'll love this. And it will make you look at your past and wonder what if?
