This review is from: Quartered Safe Out Here (Paperback)
First and foremost, I am a HUGE GMF fan. I have read his stories for decades and enjoy his writing immensely.
But this wartime autobiography is no "King Rat" - not by any stretch of the imagination.
Having a grandfather, four uncles and an elder brother who also fought in the Burma campaign and being that I have spent much time in South East Asia and the jungles of Burma and Thailand, myself, I (and they) don't even recognise the terrain he describes.
Maybe his memory failed him, I can't say. Maybe he's seen too many Rambo movies.
Parts of the book were enjoyable but much of it appears to be how he would like it to have been or how it fits in with his hindsight memory and in possibly order to fit in with his tale.
All in all, enjoyable in parts and disappointing in others.
