2.0 out of 5 stars Classic series ruined by no frills DVD release, 16 Dec. 2006
This review is from: Only Fools and Horses - The Complete Series 6 [1989] [DVD] [1981] (DVD)
As other reviewers have noted, series 6 of Only Fools and Horses saw the episodes increase in length, which greatly benefitted the show, as it allowed writer John Sullivan to craft longer, more-complex plots, as well as fit in some much needed character development. As loveable as Del and Rodders were, in five series and several specials they had largely stayed the same, and the strain of keeping the show fresh was particularly evident in series 5, which could have been the final curtain for the show (David Jason was considering leaving the show at this point). Series 6 saw storylines developed, rather than the self-contained episodes we had grown familiar with, and successfully transplanted real life into sitcom, most notably Del's attempts to be recognised as a yuppie. There are many standout moments, including the seance in Sickness and Wealth; the propane-filled inflatable dolls coming alive in Danger UXD; and Del's oft-repeated pratfall through the bar in Yuppie Love. In terms of character development, the whole episode involving Rodney's wedding shows how pivotal the relationship between the two brothers was to the show's success.

Now the negative. This series, not to mention the other 6 and various specials, have been treated shamefully on DVD. Considering how popular Only Fools is, and the amount of effort put into producing sterling DVD packages for shows like Red Dwarf, its amazing that the DVD releases for Only Fools have few, if any, extra features. The show could have benefitted tremendously from some documentaries or commentaries, even one or two interviews with the stars of the show would have sufficed. My advice would be to avoid buying this series on DVD and just catch them on UK Gold instead, as although the episodes themselves are brilliant, the DVD releases are no frills and don't justify their price tags.
