This review is from: Red Dwarf : Complete BBC Series 7 [DVD] (DVD)
A lot has changed from series 6; Rob Grant gone, no audience, no Rimmer, bbc showing they could not arrange a drunken brawl but each of these are not as bad as first appear (apart from the last thing).
Rob Grant left because of trying something new and the fact that Red Dwarf consumed his life. However him splitting up with Doug Naylor (other half of Grant Naylor) was coming. The series of 10%ers (done between series 6 and 7 of RD), which was the first show they wrote independently (One wrote one while the other wrote another etc). Naylor's script was fine while Grant was asked to constantly rewrite so he quit and Naylor did the series himself (he won an award for it).
20 minutes of a Red Dwarf show was pre-recorded anyway so they sacrificed about 10 mins in front of an audience for better lighting and impression, which does look impressive.
Even though Chris Barrie didn't want to do the series as he'd been working constantly for 6 years he did appear fully in two shows and appeared in two others.
There were production problems with model shots as RD had to pay the BBC for them to make model shots for a BBC show!
