3.0 out of 5 stars Fly me to the moon or not?, 25 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fly Me To The Moon... The Great American Songbook Volume V (Audio CD)
I am a very big fan of the Great American Song Book. To be frank I love the old standards and evergreens more than Rod Stewart. However the previous 4 volumes are superb. The band seem to be together and provide excellent backing for Rod. I really could listen to them all day and probably do this anyway. Unfortunately the backing on volume 5 is rather poor and not as clear as on previous versions. Perhaps the backing is provided by a keyboard instrument that mimics other instruments. There seems to be a lot of vibrato and echo effects. The band is not as good as in previous versions and the resulting effect is a rather unclear distorted backing sound. Sometimes even drowning out poor Rod, so I am afraid to say not one of the best recordings I have heard. Incidentally I am a musician and used to playing all of these numbers.

I agree totally with this comment. I enjoyed Rod's Great American Songbook 1.11.111.& 1V so much more. I never really liked Rod Stewart all that much when he was younger, but as he has got older and his singing has become much more soulfull, I really do like him, but this new American Songbook is such a disappointment.

Thanks for your useful comments! I too have loved the previous American Songbooks by Rod as I love these classics and was amazed at how well he performs them. I am converted to his singing at last! Shame that the backing for this latest one seems not to be as good. The instrumental perfromances are what really make a good jazz tune and the singer is only part of the sound. I shall still buy the CD but thanks for the warning!

Well yes what can one say, give up on the old songs Rodder's and stick to old Maggie, the voice don't suit.If you don't agree listen to Bobby Darin,"Beyond the Sea",Bobby Rydell,"That Old Black Magic",Frankie Laine,"Sunny Side Of The Street,"I could go on.I bought his last American Song Book cd after watching the one night only dvd live at the Albert Hall, and the same goes for that i'm afraid. But you're still one of our best Rock singers Rod.Rod's voice suits soul, listen to the cd SoulBook and you'll get the picture also the Millenium collection with his versions of the Stones Its all Over Now and Sam Cookes Twisting The Night Away this is Rod Stewarts's Genre, superb he is to.
