Great bit of kit.,
This review is from: Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E 5 Keyboard (PC DVD) (Accessory)
This is one fine keyboard. It takes a little bit of construction at the start, because it is user configurable, but that is soon dealt with via the supplied mini screwdriver.
Once it's up and running everything is configurable, you can choose any backlighting colour (infinite combo of colours) you like and vary the brightness. There are more user defined keys then you could ever need (and if you need more this thing has 3 selectable modes defined by 3 different user defined keyboard backlight colours), each key can run easily programmable macro's (keyboard commands or mouse clicks), it has its own scroll wheel plus the OLED display which can hold and launch multiple programs. Going online you can download pre-defined macros for popular games and work programs.
The keys themselves are excellent as are the palm rests. The whole construction feels solid with one of the strongest and best cables I've ever seen (think 1950's table lamp cord).
Why not 5 stars; well -
- The OLED could be put to better use with perhaps CPU/GPU temperature, FRAP rates, etc
- Why not supply a program that launches the keyboard macros when you launch a game (ideally integrating with Steam) instead of requiring you to remember to do it manually (there is a 3rd party application for this but I've not got it to work yet).
- Why not add some USB ports, the thing is plenty big enough and I could then plug my mouse into the keyboard.
- Supply a pass through connector for the headphone cable so that I can keep my surround sound system plugged into my tower unit and use the keyboard socket on the keyboard for headphones.
Overall this is a better keyboard than the Logitech G510 it replaces but it needs better support from Mad Catz particularly in terms of utilising the OLED display.
