This review is from: Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems (Kindle Edition)
This is a great comprehensive book with solutions to a whole host of sleep problems for infants & children all ages. At 6 months we tried the progressive waiting approach outlined in this book to break my baby's association with falling asleep in our arms. The progressive waiting approach famously dubbed
cry it out' suggests you leave your baby to cry for progressively longer periods starting at 3min working up to 20min. If like us you know your child is only waking because they don't know how to fall asleep without you then this is a effective way to solve this problem. This was the solution for us and she went to sleeping through on the second night & it sorting out her naps (taking 1.5-2hr naps instead of 30-45min) by the 3rd day. Our experience is below if you're interested
Our baby used to cry in our arms as we walked around for 20min to get her to sleep then we would wait another 20min for her to enter into a deep sleep & put her down. This worked quite well until around 5months when after an initial 4hr stretch she would wake within an hr of putting her down & this would go on all night! In hindsight i know that in between sleep cycles she would see the environment in which she fallen asleep had changed & this would wake her fully. She would then cry because she was tired & didn't know how to fall back to sleep without us. (Like teaching a child how to ride a bike without stabilisers you have to just let go & show them they can do it without you.) We first tried some 'no cry' alternatives shh pat /rocking until almost asleep etc our presence seemed to only aggravate /stimulate her & hinder sleep. Then reluctantly we tried this & now everyone is better off.The longest she cried was 30min. As the days progressed & the interval time increased she actually fell asleep much quicker (within 10-20min). We found on average she cried less & was asleep quicker (and for longer) than when we rocked/walked to sleep.
All babies are different with their own personalities & so another approach may work better for your baby. However if our experience sounds familiar don't let the self righteous ones on baby forums put you off ;-)

Hi there, could I just ask for an update? Is your baby still sleeping better? Thinking about trying it but feeling quite apprehensive about doing so. Thanks
