A benchmark historical work,
This review is from: Dreadnought: Britain,Germany and the Coming of the Great War (Paperback)
I'm very very keen on this book. It is, perhaps, one of the best works I've ever read, and I'm almost convinced that it should be compulsory reading for the entire nation. And possibly for several others too.
Massie has an extraordinary talent for getting under the skin of his subjects, so long as they are human. He is less sure when venturing into the technical, but as an analysis of the personalities and the politics of Europe in the decades leading up to 1914, this is unsurpassed.
On top of that, Massie has the talent to write like the best epic novelist. Nowhere else in print have I felt so much as if I was present at the time he describes, except, perhaps, with Tolstoy.
A truly outstanding piece of historical literature.
