4.0 out of 5 stars Bees take a more user-friendly approach, 19 Sept. 2005
This review is from: Free The Bees (Audio CD)
Although I loved Sunshine Hit Me and its chilled vibes, I must say that Free The Bees is a bit of a victim of "dodgy-second album syndrome." The fact that the Isle of Wight six-piece are now attatched to major label Virgin might explain it, or possibly that they just wanted to go a bit more mainstream. But whatever it is, you can't deny that Free The Bees is more mainstream. Much more beat/ guitar driven, with influences from classic sixties rock such as Cream et al, and much less of the slightly crazed psychedelic experimenting of SHM. However despite my complaints, the Bees still produce a very good album which is perfect for the summer, with lots of shimmering Hammond organs and jazzy brass bits. Particular favourites are These are the Ghosts, Wash in The Rain, I Love You and Hourglass, which all combine some great music with some delightful lyrics. For fans of SHM, see I Love You with its chilled 60's jazz horns and twinkling guitars, which I think is about as close to the first album as you will get here. In short excellent album, but a few too many filler tracks which sound a bit same-y and sadly a move away from the delightful eclecticsm on the first album.
