Too caught up in its own self-importance,
This review is from: Syriana [DVD] (DVD)
Traffic was a great movie. Syriana, by the same writer, uses the same multiple-storylines technique. Unfortunately Syriana is a disappointment. The performances are great but the technical aspects (cinematography etc.) are only just OK. The multiple story lines are all male dominated and for a film that aims to represent a multitude of views, this is both a surprise and a disappointment. The core question of the movie seems to be: What do we do when the world's supply of oil starts running out. This is obviously a very important question but it is probably never going to make for a very interesting thriller. Such a question is probably best dealt with in a documentary. The movie asks lots of questions and puts lots of different points of view across. However, the movie comes across as somewhat preachy and self-important. It doesn't offer any solutions but does make sure to suggest that we're all to blame for the problems the movie portrays simply because we use oil. Although this is not a very good movie, it is still nice that movies like this are being produced so that we have a choice away from brain-numbing action heavy blockbusters. I just hope that future movies in this genre are more successfully executed.
