This is it. The final book in the trilogy. Reaching the end is always a bittersweet moment - on the one hand you have the satisfaction of knowing how it all concludes...but on the other hand ... that's it - there's no more. I've loved the previous two books in this series and "Strategos: Island in the Storm" just wraps it all up perfectly.
Gordon Doherty has a talent for weaving little strands through a book - whether it be a certain aspect of a character, a certain little plot point that sticks in your head - and, in "Strategos: Island in the Storm", he brings all the strands together and ties up the trilogy with a very emotional and very satisfying end. You may be disappointed that there will be no more "Strategos" books - but you will not be disappointed with the journey and you will most definitely not be disappointed with the ending.
I mentioned "emotional" - and it is. Very much so. There's almost an air of tragedy hanging over the book - but don't be taken in. Tragedy abounds, yes - well, it's the final book...I think I can safely say (without anyone screaming "spoilers") that characters are going to die. There's betrayal, injustice and despair - but there's also satisfaction, joy and hope.
For me, I didn't want to reach the end but you quickly get totally engrossed in Apion's world, swept along with him in battle, reflecting with him in the quieter moments until finally...no, I can't tell you - spoilers!
There's only ever been one series of books that I can pick up and instantly lose myself in; that make me want to shout from the rooftops that everyone should read - and that is "The Lord of the Rings". I've now got another series to do the same with.
Now, however, I'm going to reread the entire trilogy again - and try to live down the fact that I was in tears during the final couple of chapters...
