This review is from: The Fringes of Power: Downing Street Diaries, 1939-55 (Hardcover)
A very interesting account of Colville's time as Churchill's private secretary from 1939 to 1955. In addition to the political activities, tensions in the war time cabinet etc, Sir john includes fascinating insights into the social life and attitudes of the class to which he belonged, viz, aristocratic, public-school, Oxbridge, senior civil service. His text also includes many phrases taken from the Bible and Hymns which may be lost on a contemporary readership, but which demonstrates how religion has declined in Gt Britain over the past few decades.
A must read for anyone interested in the politics of the period, the second World War, and Churchill whom he shows as a man, not just as the war leader of the Country.
