Not able to believe this Butterfly,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Puccini: Madama Butterfly (Metropolitan Opera (DVD)
Butterfly is supposed to be 15 years old, naive and taken advantage of. When the lead singer has the looks and the voice of an experienced woman well into middle age the plot simply falls apart. The singing is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the rest is very average; neither ground-breaking or particularly creative. Even on a CD, without the disadvantage of close up photography, it would be obvious from the maturity of the voice that butterfly was well able to look after herself and would not fall for such a shallow man.
I do not mean to say that mature women are unattractive, far from it, but this role was a mismatch for Patricia Racette. Such a lady cannot play a delicate innocent who is led up the garden path into a shot gun marriage by a bounder.
