This review is from: Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition (Audio CD)
"Night on the Bare Mountain" is here played in it's original version, not the well-known Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement. Nevertheless, the original version seems to be more rythmically striking and somewhat more crude. This version sounds to me more colourful than obscure.
The choral works are very-well sung and played, filled with remarkable splendour, Elena Zaremba' singing being pleasantly persuasive.
"Pictures from an Exhibition" is simply beautiful... From the distant melancholy of "The Old Castle" to the triumphant "Great Gate at Kiev" there isn't a single boring minute.
The orchestral playing is really good and sound quality of this CD lets you enjoy every bit of music, every detail, every tone.
I say that this is definitly a must-have.

"Pictures at an Exhibition" conducted by Abbado is a live or studio recording?
